The Venus variety was bred at the Summerland Research Station in Canada. Hedelfingen and Windsor parental forms were used in the breeding.

The plant belongs to the mid-season variety group. The fruits are characterized by a dark, almost black color and good flavor qualities. The variety is often used in scientific research to evaluate productivity on various rootstocks.
