The Pekin variety tree has medium vigor. Flowering occurs slightly later than that of the Redhaven variety, and the flowers are small in size. The variety is self-fertile, and the winter hardiness level of flower buds is comparable to the Redhaven variety.
The variety is characterized by high resistance of leaves and fruits to bacterial spot. The fruits of the variety may be inferior in size and taste to some other varieties, such as Early Redhaven.
Pekin is used in horticulture and as genetic material for breeding work. In particular, it was used as a parent form in the development of the Clayton variety, as well as in studies of the genetic characteristics of fruit skin when crossing with the Durbin nectarine.
