The variety was obtained as a result of a breeding program at the University of Bologna through open pollination of the variety «Angeleno». The plant belongs to the group of plums intended for commercial orchards and demonstrates good plasticity to various soil types.
During studies, the variety was classified as less susceptible to European stone fruit phytoplasmoses. Furthermore, «Black Glow» is used as a pollen donor in further breeding work for the development of new plum varieties.
