The variety is a product of the University of Bologna breeding program. Genetically, it originates from the 'Angeleno' variety.

The variety belongs to the group of Japanese plums grown for commercial production. It was studied in the context of susceptibility to European stone fruit yellows phytoplasmosis and was also used as a pollen donor in the development of new varieties.
