The variety is a hybrid of a European pear and a Chinese ("sand") pear. Anatomically, the leaves of the variety are closer to Asian species. It is important to distinguish between the Kieffer variety itself and its seedlings, which may possess different characteristics.

The plant belongs to autumn varieties. The variety is characterized by high resistance to fire blight and septoria leaf spot, while it may be prone to fruit blackening when used as a rootstock. The fruits have good transportability.
