The variety «Marmela» is a traditional Portuguese pear variety (landrace) that has historically been maintained by farmers. It is genetically distinct from other local varieties and commercial cultivars, such as «Rocha».
Detailed descriptions of the plant's morphological and agronomic characteristics are absent in open scientific publications. The variety is a subject of genetic research and monitoring by the National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research of Portugal (INIAV).
