The variety is the result of Italian breeding, obtained in 1930. The fruits are distinguished by smooth skin and an attractive appearance; the variety belongs to the early group and is used in commercial fruit growing as a dessert pear.
In a number of European reference books, the 'Marienbirne' variety is identified with the 'Santa Maria' pear variety. Detailed systematized data on agrotechnical characteristics and plant resistance to diseases are not detailed in the sources.
