The name Tmavá, which translates as "dark," is not a standardized variety, but belongs to the dark-fruited forms of Ribes aureum identified during breeding work in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The plant is a deciduous shrub 2 to 3 meters in height with a robust root system and fragrant golden-yellow flowers.

As a form of the species Ribes aureum, Tmavá possesses high winter hardiness (down to –45 °C) and drought tolerance, and is characterized by resistance to diseases and pests typical of black currant. The berries of this form are described as firm, shiny, black, having dry detachment, and are suitable for various types of industrial processing.
