Black Down
ActiveRibes nigrum L. · Blackcurrant
University of Bristol L Asthom (GB)
10 August 2026
The bush of the variety is large and spreading. The ripening period is characterized as mid-season, although in a number of descriptions the variety is indicated as late. The medium-sized berries have a glossy black color, thin tender skin, and juicy pulp. The taste is pronounced, moderately acidic with a slight sweetness.
The variety is productive, however, the presence of pollinating insects is required for harvest. The plant is sensitive to reversion virus and leaf spot; the flowers are also susceptible to damage by spring frosts. The fruits are of universal use and are suitable for fresh consumption and processing.
