Black Down
ActiveRibes nigrum L. · Blackcurrant
University of Bristol L Asthom (GB)
10 August 2026
The variety was obtained in 1983 by crossing the varieties «Boskopská čierna» and «Silvergieterova». The bush is vigorous, semi-erect, sufficiently dense, with medium-thickness shoots. Berries ripen in the first half of July; they are large, spherical in shape, black in color, with firm skin and juicy, sweet flesh.
The plant is self-fertile, enters fruiting early, and serves as a good pollinator for other varieties. Average yield is about 4 kg per bush, with a maximum of up to 6 kg. The variety shows resistance to American powdery mildew but is sensitive to rust.
Requires warm regions, fertile soils, and sufficient irrigation. Fruits are for universal use, suitable for fresh consumption, freezing, and canning.
