The Jonova variety is one of the later breeding achievements within the currant and gooseberry hybridization program. The plant is characterized by a less vigorous habit compared to other known jostaberry representatives, while maintaining the culture's inherent resistance to powdery mildew and the blackcurrant gall mite.

The fruits are large, range in color from garnet to dark red, and ripen simultaneously on a single cluster. The variety is intended for fresh consumption, freezing, and various types of processing, including the preparation of jams, jellies, compotes, juices, and liqueurs. The taste of the berries is characterized as sour.
