The shrub can reach a height of about 2 meters and is characterized by high growth vigor. The plant is distinguished by the absence of thorns and high resistance to diseases such as powdery mildew, leaf spot, blister rust, and bud mite.

The berries of Jostabær are intermediate in size between blackcurrant and gooseberry. When unripe, their flavor is dominated by notes of gooseberry, and when ripe, by those of blackcurrant. Harvesting is a labor-intensive process due to the crop's unsuitability for mechanized harvesting.

The fruits are used fresh and for various culinary processing, including the preparation of jams, juices, and wines. The name Jostabær is a designation for a hybrid group, not a specific variety.
