The mature plant reaches 2–4 meters in height with a comparable crown width. The main distinctive feature is the deeply dissected lacy leaves, which have a green-red tint upon budding, and then become deep dark-purple or almost black.

Small flowers are collected in large umbellate inflorescences, have a creamy-pink or white color and a characteristic aroma. The fruits are small shiny dark-purple or black berries. Flowering occurs in May–June, fruit ripening in late summer and early autumn.

The variety is used as a solitaire in landscape design, for creating hedges and contrasting accents. The plant is winter hardy (zone 4), can be affected by aphids or Verticillium wilt. Fruits and flowers are suitable for culinary processing.
