The plant is a shrub or small tree 2.5–4 meters tall with an upright growth habit. The leaves are compound, pinnate, consisting of 3–7 oval-elliptic leaflets, and retain an intense dark purple color throughout the summer period.

The flowers are collected in corymbose inflorescences, have a lemon scent and a pink or purple-pink hue. The fruits are shiny black-violet berries that ripen at the end of summer. The plant tolerates pruning well, is resistant to a wide range of soils and has a USDA hardiness zone of 4–8.

Parts of the plant contain glycosides, therefore they can be toxic if consumed raw. The berries are suitable for culinary processing and are used for making jams, wines and syrups.
