The variety is characterized as a non-hybrid, population-type rye. During variety trials in the early 2000s, it demonstrated a yield of 7.2 t/ha and Falling Number values of over 300.

Trials for resistance to ergot infection were conducted. Today, Canovus is mentioned primarily in archival lists or databases for the calibration of agricultural equipment.
