The variety was bred in the USA in 1867 by Albert Bresee as a seedling from Garnet Chili. In Northern European countries, it became widespread under many local names, including Hämeen kesäperuna. The plant is of medium height, blooms profusely with white flowers, and berry formation occurs rarely.
Tubers of the Early Rose variety have noticeable eye depressions, a pale red skin hue, and white flesh. The crop belongs to early table varieties. The variety shows high susceptibility to late blight of leaves and tubers, as well as to potato virus Y, which limits its modern use to amateur gardening.
