Helguhvammskartöflur is not an independent variety, but is one of the names for the potato Rauðar íslenskar. This variety has a long history of cultivation in Iceland and is known under a number of synonyms, including Bleikar íslenskar and Íslendingur. The previously distinguished selection line Ólafsrauður also belongs to this population.
The tubers of the variety have a round-oval, slightly flattened shape. The variety is characterized by abundant tuber formation, which remain relatively small during a short growing season. It is intended for table use and is classified as a genetic resource and historical variety.
