The variety was obtained as a result of selection from a population of local red Icelandic potatoes in 1936–1938 at the experimental station in Akureyri. In genetic databases, it is considered as one of the variants or synonyms of the Rauðar íslenskar variety group.
The tubers of the variety have red skin and light yellow flesh. When analyzing samples received in genetic collections under this name, no significant morphological traits were identified that would allow it to be distinguished as a separate independent variety.
