The Punainen puikula variety is a synonym for the old Tysk blå variety, presumably originating from Germany and widespread in Scandinavia and Finland. The plant is characterized by a tall and sparse bush, flowering profusely with small white flowers with modified stamens.
Tubers have a long or long-oval shape with a smooth surface and shallow eyes. The skin is blue, which is also present under the cork layer, while the flesh remains white. The sprouts are long, dark blue-violet in color.
The variety is mid-late, has a high dry matter content and a very mealy consistency, and shows a low tendency for flesh darkening when boiled. The crop is susceptible to late blight and potato virus Y, but resistant to mop-top virus and tobacco rattle virus.
