The shrub has a compact spherical crown and reaches a height of 50–80 cm. The leaves are golden-yellow during the spring-summer period, and turn reddish or orange-red shades in autumn. Small pink or pink-violet flowers are gathered in flat corymbose inflorescences; the flowering period lasts from July to August.

The plant is winter hardy (USDA zone 5, down to -28...-30°C), drought tolerant, and undemanding. It is light-loving; in good lighting, it retains the bright leaf color and blooms more profusely. It prefers loose, fertile, moderately moist soils and tolerates spring pruning well. It is used in landscape design for borders, rock gardens, mixed borders, and container cultivation.
