The wheat variety Elena was developed at the Hodowla Roślin Strzelce breeding center. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, it was widely used in Polish agronomic research and trials as a standard reference sample for comparison.
In scientific studies, the variety served as an object of genetic research aimed at analyzing gliadin proteins, and was also used to evaluate the bread-making quality of the grain. Like other members of the Triticum aestivum L. species, the variety was intended for food use.
