The Gros Bleu variety is an heirloom wheat bred from the Noé variety, which was introduced from Ukraine. The plant is characterized as early-maturing, which facilitated its adaptation to the climatic conditions of the regions of France during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Agronomically, the variety was prone to lodging and yellow rust infection, which limited its widespread use in certain areas. Currently, the variety is considered an old landrace and is primarily preserved in seed banks.
