The variety is a local wheat landrace originating from the Rupertiwinkel region and the foothills of the Salzburg Alps, known since the 16th century. The plant is tall, reaching 2 meters in height, and is a winter crop. The variety possesses resistance to lodging and fungal diseases and is adapted to climates with high precipitation levels.
The yield of the variety is lower than modern standards, ranging from 2.3–3 t/ha with a seeding rate of 130–160 kg/ha. The grain possesses high baking quality, and products made from it retain freshness for a long time. In addition to flour production, the grain is used in brewing and for the preparation of spirits.
