The Orpheus variety (sometimes designated as SY Orpheus) belongs to the species Triticum aestivum L. In European classification systems, it is presented in sections on winter soft wheat, although there are references to the variety among spelt subspecies (Triticum aestivum subsp. spelta), which requires clarification when identifying seed material.
In scientific publications, the variety is considered an object for studying grain composition, specifically in the context of non-starch polysaccharide content and the analysis of 1BL/1RS chromosome translocations. The variety is included in the official variety lists of a number of European countries.
