The variety was historically cultivated in the Enna and Catania regions on the island of Sicily. Currently, it is classified as a genetic resource preserved in specialized collections and is being studied for its potential in malt production and brewing.

The ear of the variety is dense, oblong or fusiform in shape, about 8 cm long. The awns are long, partially wavy, and have a black base and a yellow tip. The glume is white or yellow with brown shades, and the keel is smooth and slightly curved.

The grain is elliptical in shape, 7–8 mm long, has a vitreous texture, is red in color, and is translucent. The variety possesses a broad genetic base and demonstrates genetic resistance to stress conditions, including soil salinity.
