The variety has several alternative names, such as Francesa, Francisa, Franzisa, Francesella, and Franzesa. Historically, it was widespread in Sicily, particularly in the provinces of Agrigento, Caltanissetta, and Catania, and was first described in 1818. Currently, the variety is considered practically extinct.

The ear of the Francescona variety is oblong, fusiform, and about 8 cm long. The awns are long, partially wavy, with a black base and a yellow tip. The glumes are white or yellow with brown stripes, the keel is smooth, and the tooth is slightly curved. The caryopsis is red, translucent, elliptical in shape with a triangular cross-section and a vitreous surface.
