The variety belongs to the Syrian group (syriacum) and is characterized as an awned plant with a dense ear. It was developed for adaptation to difficult growing conditions, including poor soils and arid regions.

Tripolino was traditionally used for the production of pasta and cereals. Currently, the variety is used as genetic material for identifying traits responsible for gluten quality and adaptation to environmental stress factors.
