The variety is of French origin and is characterized by early bud break. Morphologically, it is represented by five-lobed leaves and medium-sized clusters with black berries. The plant possesses relatively high resistance to most fungal diseases.

Abouriou is used primarily as a component in blends, providing wines with a saturated color and an aromatic profile with hints of red and black berries, spices, and menthol; however, it is also suitable for the production of varietal wines.
