The variety is indigenous, with its exact origin unknown; in literature, it is often linked to the Spanish variety Graciano. The grape is characterized by late ripening and low yield, and is prone to downy mildew and grey mold.

The berries are used exclusively for winemaking. The wines are distinguished by intense color, extract, and aging potential. The aromatic profile includes notes of blackberry, blueberry, cherry, spices, and pepper, and with proper vinification, the tannins become soft and silky.
