The variety has ancient origins in Burgundy and belongs to the mid-early or late maturity group. The clusters are small, compact, and cylindrical in shape, visually resembling a pinecone. The berries are small or medium-sized and colored dark blue or almost black.
The plant possesses relatively high winter hardiness, but is characterized by low resistance to Botrytis cinerea and medium susceptibility to downy mildew and powdery mildew. The variety is demanding of soil and climatic conditions, preferring gentle slopes with calcareous soils and low yield.
The grapes are intended for winemaking. Young wines possess pronounced red berry aromas, such as cherry, raspberry, and strawberry. With long aging, the bouquet develops woody and earthy notes, as well as forest floor undertones with a soft tannin structure.
