The variety is autochthonous to the border regions of Spain and Portugal, in particular to Sierra de Francia, Douro, and Dão. Genetic studies indicate that the variety is the result of a natural cross between the Molar variety and an unknown variety.

The plant has medium vigor. The clusters are medium-sized, the berries are round, dark blue in color with thin skin. The variety is late-maturing and considered delicate to grow, showing high sensitivity to fungal diseases, including downy mildew, powdery mildew, and gray mold.

Wines made from RUFETE are characterized as full-bodied or medium-bodied, with soft tannins, mineral notes, and aromas of spices and flowers. The variety has high aging potential and was historically used in the production of Port wine.
