The variety is native to the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula and is a vine with early bud burst and a late ripening period. The bunches are large and dense, the berries have thin skin and a pale red color. The plant grows well on calcareous and clay soils under Mediterranean climate conditions.

The variety is sensitive to spring frosts, drought, and susceptible to black rot. The yield is high, reaching 8 000–12 000 kg per hectare. The main growing areas are in Catalonia; it is also found under the synonym Bonicaire.

A wine grape variety traditionally used for creating rosé still and sparkling wines, as well as varietal red wines. The wines are characterized by a moderate alcohol level, high acidity, and aromas of red berries and spices. It has a number of synonyms, including Trapat, Trepan, and Trepat Negre.
