The variety is unique to the Azores archipelago and is not related to the mainland Portuguese Arinto variety. The vines are adapted to extreme growing conditions on volcanic soils near the ocean, where they are exposed to strong salty winds and are often cultivated in crevices of volcanic basalt behind protective stone walls.

The plant is distinguished by good fruit-bearing capacity and high resistance to the adverse weather conditions of the region. Wine products from this variety are characterized by marked freshness, high acidity, minerality with notes of sea salt, as well as hints of citrus, green apple, and tropical fruits.
