The variety is a genetic mutation of the well-known Portuguese variety Arinto de Bucelas. The variety name includes the index R, derived from the Portuguese word Roxo, meaning red or purple, which characterizes the color of the berries.

This variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera and is intended for winemaking. It is used in blends in various wine regions of Portugal, particularly in the Dão region. In specialized literature, the variety is considered an independent entity, not identical to other varieties that have the word Arinto in their name.
