Chardonnay is a natural hybrid of the Pinot and Gouais blanc varieties. The variety is characterized by plasticity, due to which wines from it vary from fresh mineral wines with notes of green apple and citrus to full-bodied wines with aromas of vanilla, butter, and toast.
The variety is susceptible to gray mold, powdery mildew, and downy mildew. Due to early flowering, there is a risk of damage by spring frosts. In historical documents, the name Aubain was sometimes mistakenly identified with the Aubin blanc variety, which is an independent plant.
