Blauer Portugieser is a natural hybrid of the Grüner Sylvaner and Blaue Zimmettraube varieties, whose place of origin is considered to be Lower Styria. The variety is characterized by vigorous growth and high yield.

The grape belongs to wine varieties with an early or early-mid ripening period. It possesses low resistance to downy mildew and grey mold, which requires special attention during cultivation.

Wines from this variety are distinguished by a light body, freshness, and pronounced acidity. By limiting yield and using barrel aging, it is possible to obtain more full-bodied drinks.
