The variety known in Portugal as Jaen is genetically identical to the Spanish variety Mencía. It is a wine variety obtained as a result of a natural crossing of Alfrocheiro and Patorra. It is distinguished by early bud break and ripening, is characterized by average yield, and the wines produced from it possess rich color, high acidity, tannin, and aromas of dark fruits with spices.

The separate variety Jaén Tinto (Jaén Negro), common in Andalusia and Extremadura, is genetically distinct from Mencía and represents a natural hybrid of the varieties Listán Prieto and Cayetana Blanca. Due to the similarity of names, confusion often arises in sources with other varieties, such as Cayetana Blanca, which are sometimes referred to as Jaén Blanco.
