The term is most often used as a synonym for the Primitivo (Zinfandel) variety, which is a wine grape variety requiring careful management and characterized by compact bunches sensitive to humidity. The plant prefers a hot, dry climate.

The name also appears as a synonym for the Montepulciano variety, which is a medium-vigor, late-ripening variety with perfect flowers, common in central and southern Italy. In a number of sources, «Primaticcio Bianco» is mentioned as a synonym for the Canaiolo Bianco variety, used in blends in Tuscany and Umbria.
