The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera and is genetically identical to the Croatian variety Crljenak Kaštelanski and the American Zinfandel. The name Primitivo comes from a Latin word meaning "early-ripening". The variety is used as a wine grape for the production of red wines.
The berries are medium-sized, blue-black in color, often with bloom. Ripening occurs relatively early, by the end of August — beginning of September. The variety is prone to high sugar accumulation and requires careful monitoring, as the berries can overripen quickly.
Wines from Primitivo are characterized by high extract, significant alcohol content, deep color, and aromas of dark fruits. The name Primitivo di Gioia currently more often indicates the geographical origin of the wine from the DOC Gioia del Colle zone.
