The variety is an intraspecific hybrid of Vitis vinifera. The vines are vigorous, and the flower type is hermaphroditic. Bunches are medium-sized, conical, and dense, with a tendency to be affected by rot. Berries are round, dark blue or dark purple with juicy flesh.
The variety is characterized by an early ripening period, although some sources indicate a period of 150–160 days, during which the berries may ripen unevenly. The variety is prone to millerandage, has low resistance to diseases (downy mildew, powdery mildew), and moderate winter hardiness down to -19…-21°C.
Primitivo has the capacity for high sugar accumulation up to 30 Brix. It is a wine grape variety intended for the production of red wines with high alcohol content, saturated color, and pronounced tannins, as well as for juice production. The transportability of the harvest is low.
