The variety has ancient roots and originates from Dalmatia. The name comes from a Latin word meaning early ripening. Genetically, this variety is identical to the American Zinfandel and the Croatian variety Tribidrag.

The plant is thermophilic and well adapted to hot and dry climates. The grape is distinguished by dark skin and early bud burst, flowering, and ripening. The fruits are capable of accumulating high sugar levels up to 30%.

The grape is used for the production of red wines, both dry and sweet. Wines from this variety possess an intense color, a high concentration of berry and spice aromas, high alcohol content, and pronounced yet velvety tannins.
