The Preto Martinho variety is a fast-growing vine belonging to the early-ripening group. It is characterized by high yield and relative susceptibility to fungal diseases.
The grapes are used for the production of red wines with moderate alcohol content and are often used in blends, for example with the Castelão Francês variety. Genetically, it is a natural hybrid of the Marufo and Carrega Tinto varieties.
The main regions of cultivation are Lisbon, Ribatejo and Trás-os-Montes. Among the known synonyms of the variety are Amostrinha, Amostrinha Noir, Preto Martinho Aveiras, Preto Martinho do Oeste and Preto Martinho Ribatejo.
