The variety belongs to the group of landraces known as "Ottofile", which literally translates as "eight-rowed", due to the characteristic number of kernel rows on the cob. The plant is late-maturing and possesses good drought tolerance. There are various regional ecotypes, including the Mantuan white.
This variety is valued for its specific aromatic profile and taste quality, exceeding that of industrial hybrids. Currently, it is used as a niche crop for the preparation of traditional polenta, corn flour, and regional confectionery products, such as paste di meliga biscuits.
