Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is a local landrace historically common in the Italian region of Piedmont. The name "Ottofile" is due to the fact that the kernels on the ear are arranged in exactly eight rows.

The plant has an average height and a sturdy stalk, characterized by vigorous early growth and hardiness. The ears have a narrow, cylindrical shape, with an average length of about 20 cm. The kernels are large, semi-flint, with an orange-yellow crown color.

The variety prefers fertile soils and has good root stability. The flour produced from this variety is valued for its sweet taste and intense aroma, and is traditionally used for preparing polenta and the Piedmontese "paste di meliga" cookies.
