Alternaria radicina is the causal agent of black rot, which affects seedlings in the manner of damping-off and forms deep, dark, sunken lesions on root crops during storage.

Carrot resistance to this pathocomplex is polygenic in nature, with the term tolerance being more frequently used in breeding to account for the influence of interallelic interactions and environmental factors. In professional documentation, codes Ad for Alternaria dauci and Ar for Alternaria radicina are used to denote resistance to the pathogens, although there is no clear classification into pathogen races.
