The main causal agent of pea anthracnose is the fungus Colletotrichum pisi; however, studies also confirm the involvement of species from the Colletotrichum acutatum and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides complexes, as well as the fungi C. lindemuthianum and C. truncatum. The pathogen is a highly specialized parasite capable of infecting field pea and sweet pea throughout the entire growing season.
Symptoms of the infection appear on all above-ground parts of the plants. Irregularly shaped spots with a yellowish-brown center and a dark margin form on the leaves, while stem lesions are often elongated in shape. Round or oval sunken spots up to 0.8 mm in size form on the pods. A characteristic diagnostic feature is the formation of orange-pink or reddish sporulation cushions with dark setae in the center of the lesions.
