Bacterial blight of hazelnut is a dangerous disease caused by the gram-negative bacterium Xanthomonas arboricola pv. corylina, which affects all aerial parts of the plant.

The pathogen is a highly specialized aerobic bacterium, Xanthomonas arboricola pv. corylina. Studies of the pathogen's genetic diversity using molecular typing methods reveal the presence of several clades that differ in geographic origin and metabolic characteristics.

The disease affects buds, leaves, shoots, and trunks. Symptoms include reddish-brown necrotic spots with a chlorotic halo on the leaves, bud necrosis, and the formation of depressed necroses on the wood, which can lead to branch girdling and plant death.

Under high humidity, bacterial exudate is observed on affected tissues, and cambium necrosis is found under the bark. Specific genes for resistance to the pathogen have not been described; breeding is based on evaluating the quantitative tolerance of cultivars, as reliable genetic markers do not exist.
