White mold

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

White mold is a dangerous fungal disease caused by a soil-borne pathogen that affects a wide range of crops and persists in the soil in the form of sclerotia. The disease leads to significant crop losses and reduced product quality.

Mentioned in descriptions 3 042 varieties reference book.

The disease manifests as seedling rot and the appearance of brown, water-soaked spots on stems and flower heads, which become covered with a dense, white, cotton-like mycelial growth. Black, dense structures known as sclerotia form inside and on the surface of tissues, serving as a source of infection.

Pathogen development depends on temperature ranges from +10°C to +25°C, as well as high soil and air humidity, which are necessary for the germination of sclerotia. The risk of infection increases with high planting density, poor crop rotation, and excessive nitrogen fertilization.

Resistance of varieties to white mold is a quantitative polygenic trait provided by cell wall density and the plant's ability to neutralize oxalic acid secreted by the fungus. Resistance assessment in variety trials is conducted by recording the spread and severity of plant infection under field conditions on natural or artificial inoculation plots.
