Arachis hypogaea L.
A fungal disease of peanut caused by the pathogen Agroathelia rolfsii, characterized by the infection of the crown area, stems, pegs, and pods with a white cottony growth and the formation of small sclerotia.

The causal agent of white mold, or southern stem rot, on peanut is the fungus Agroathelia rolfsii, which infects plant parts in contact with the soil. In the early stages, brown necrotic lesions form on stems at the soil surface, which then become covered with a characteristic dense white mycelium. Numerous small, rounded sclerotia, resembling mustard seeds, form within the mycelium; initially light-colored, they turn dark brown as they mature.
The pathogen actively attacks pegs and developing pods directly in the soil, leading to significant yield losses. Specific resistance genes to this disease in Arachis hypogaea have not yet been identified. Breeding is based on identifying quantitative resistance traits associated with loci (QTL) found in wild peanut relatives, while the resistance of commercial varieties is determined primarily through field trials.
