Diseases
Arachis hypogaea L.
Fungal diseases of early and late leaf spots, caused by specific pathogens, which lead to premature defoliation and significant yield losses in peanuts.
In the reference 4 varieties crop Peanut, where this is mentioned in the description.
Early leaf spot is caused by the fungus Cercospora arachidicola and manifests as reddish-brown spots with a distinct yellow chlorotic halo, with sporulation localized on the upper leaf surface. Late leaf spot, caused by Nothopassalora personata, is characterized by darker, almost black circular spots without a distinct halo and the development of sporulation primarily on the underside of the leaf blade. Symptoms caused by Alternaria alternata and Ramularia arachidis may also occur on the crop.
Resistance to these pathogens in peanuts is quantitative in nature and is associated with specific quantitative trait loci (QTLs), such as qLLSA05, qLLSB05, or qELSA03, identified during breeding programs involving wild species, including Arachis cardenasii and Arachis stenosperma. Given the high susceptibility of most commercial cultivars, breeding is focused on marker-assisted selection for these resistance regions.
